We are all familiar with this since childhood, the face off between small David and Mighty Goliath, I took a deeper look at what transpired then and found out the following that can be of help us in facing the battles of life:

1. In as much as we cannot annul the fact that David's Faith played an important role in his victory over Goliath, we can not also annul the fact that David was an exceptional slinger.
Power Point: Faith is as important as Work in facing reality for faith without work is dead.

2. It takes an exceptional skill and constant practice to take out a target with a slingshot, especially a moving target; an art that David mastered alongside the string instrument during his lonely hours in the wilderness and used it on the bear and lion whose strength and size makes Goliath of no difference.
(Power Point: Your greatest achievement in life will come from a skill you learnt and perfected in those precious lonely hours).

3. No one among the armies of Israel had the courage to face Goliath because they were all focused on Goliath advantages over them (his size, experience and fighting gears). None of them tried to look out for a weakness, in Goliath, that they can exploit to their advantage. David's Courage was boosted because he found one; Goliath source of Advantage [his size] was also the source of his Disadvantage [he's slow]. Hence to take Goliath down, all that was needed was something small fast and precise which he [David] happened to have in his possession.
Power point Don't allow the thought of what you don't have make you think you are at a disadvantage to the extent that you fail to consider what you can efficiently do with the little you have which gives you some degree of advantage*.

4. One may ask why didn't David take this idea to King Saul rather than having to talk about it to some of the soldiers? The reason is that David does not most probably have access to the King. If he must see the king he will have to go through captain of ten, of hundreds of thousands, through general and other bureaucracies. So he opted for sharing His perspective to problem with some soldiers who in turn spread it until it was "rehearsed" to the King. Take note of the word rehearsed in 1Sam. 17;31. It means that David's perspective of the problem was told to Saul over and over again most probably by different persons until he had to have David called.
Power point; *when you have a fail proof solution to a problem that is apparently unsolvable and don't have access to higher authority, get as many people as possible to talk about your perspective to problem that will make solution possible, you will be surprised on how fast it will get to the kings ear*.

5. People feel that King Saul was been a coward to have sent David to face Goliath rather than going himself but, what they don't know is that, it was a very difficult decision for him to make. Remember that, the vanquished will become a slave to the victor. Hence, King Saul didn't just cowardly dump the freedom of his Kingdom on boy that is sure to lose. He saw something in David, something that tell him that despite David's, small size and inexperience, there is a chance that the young lad might win. He felt that David knew something about the giant that can be used as an advantage.

6. When Saul gave David his fighting gears, he was simply telling David to fight Goliath on Goliath's terms (man-man face off) of which Goliath was fully prepared for, covered from head to toe with Body armour, shield, spear and sword. David dump the gears because it stole his advantage (his speed and element of surprise) giving Goliath more advantage over him. So he went out against Goliath on his own terms and Goliath lost woefully to him because he never expected that the battle will be fought on any terms other than his of which he fully prepared for. It was like bringing a knife to a gunfight.

7. David went against Goliath with a Shepherd staff, sling and stones. When Goliath fell under the impact of the stone, David had nothing to do more damage; to totally vanquish the enemy "there was no sword in his hand" (1Sam. 17:50). What he did was to quickly takeover Goliath sword and with it, vanquished him.
